A Video Installation for Gensler’s Media Wall in their Austin, TX lobby
VIEW THE FULL PROJECT AND JOURNEY ON THE Morphology Documentation Site
PROJECT CONTEXT:
In Yuliya Lanina’s Fall 2023 DXD Studio class at UT Austin, students formed teams to develop a video installation for Gensler, the client, to display on the Media Wall in their Austin, TX lobby.
Teams regularly worked with the Gensler DXD Team to refine the project concept, storytelling, visuals, and presentations.
My role:

Eriane Austria, Technical Producer
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Team Morphology created a video installation that is inspired by the recursive geometric patterns that are shared by science and architecture alike. This concept visually manifests as abstracted architectural images through the production of dynamic fractal patterns. We focused on the theme of interconnectivity from ideation to finalization.
We tailored our project concept to the context that this work was made in through the visual storytelling of The Moody Center, a collaboration between Gensler, UT Austin, and others to immerse, engage, and connect people through its architectural design. Morphology shows the interconnectedness between 1) structures and people and 2) Gensler, UT Austin, and Em and I as a team.
THE JOURNEY
MY DELIVERABLES
I created the Morphology project website, which details our process, including video documentation, presentations, and other materials throughout Morphology’s development. I focused on creating clear information hierarchies, on-theme UI/UX design, intuitive flow between and within pages, and concise writing about Morphology’s development. My portfolio page offers an overview, so I encourage you to stroll through the website to get a more in-depth look into Morphology and each of our contributions!
Early in development, I researched the technicalities of creating video installation and motion graphics work, as I did not have direct experience creating motion graphics or large-scale video installation work prior to this class. I also connected my seemingly disparate fields into the early project concept, storytelling, and demos alongside Em. I experimented with ideas and developed a deeper understanding of multiple tools through creating demos and tinkering in our Adobe After Effects files throughout the semester. As the semester continued, my responsibilities shifted to:
coordinating file uploads
checking technical specs
documenting the process and feedback we received
providing and asking for feedback
designing presentations for Morphology
creating Morphology’s project website
My efforts as the Technical Producer for Morphology resulted in a robust project that was well-coordinated, -communicated, and -documented. In addition to learning new processes and tools and further developing my existing skills, I felt that I grew a lot as a professional in my ability to pivot, design, and communicate effectively.
Em and I are both versed in production and project management and greatly value interdisciplinary collaboration and teamwork — all of which lean heavily on prompt, clear, and supportive communication. Because of these shared skills and values, we worked well together. I’m incredibly thankful for Em as a teammate for her amazing creative direction, video skills, and herself as a person in creating Morphology. Our frequent check-ins with Yuliya and the Gensler DXD Team alongside our solid presentation skills helped us develop and communicate a cohesive, compelling work.
Overall, I believe that the most valuable takeaway from creating Morphology for Gensler’s Media Wall was the importance of frequent testing and feedback. In almost every class, we evaluated our progress which kept our projects on a tight schedule and within scope. Collectively as a class, we gained a lot of insights because of this iterative process, which improved the visuals, narrative, and adherence to/compatibility with the Media Wall’s technical specs across all of the projects. I’m grateful for this experience and everyone who offered us feedback!
