PROJECT CONTEXT

THE JOURNEY

THE PROCESS

I joined MoHA as a Digital Arts Fellow in February 2023 with my first task in rebranding and graphic design. In rebranding a game developer meetup previously known as Juegos Rancheros, the team reimagined the brand to evoke inclusion, playfulness, and community with a hint of Juego Ranchero’s wild west brand for recognition. This re-imagination is reflected in our decision to rename the meetup to Games Y’all, with name credits to Joe Rotheberg. With the goal and name in mind, I decided to merge the Wild West theme with a playful color palette and mascot reflective of Games Y’all’s values and the fun nature of games. I received overwhelmingly positive feedback on the logo and color palette from the Digital Arts team who stated that I captured the spirit of how they envisioned this meetup to be rebranded: an enjoyable and inviting space for everyone interested in indie game development.

As Games Y’all has grown in organizational structure, popularity, and interest in-person and online, I have continued communicating the Games Y’all brand and values through graphic design work and outreach to invite more folks into the space. Such works include web graphics for the Games Y’all website to further establish the brand and promotional graphics for each event as the Graphic Designer for the Games Y’all Communications Committee, which was established in March 2023.

Reflection

This was my first dip into professional digital work after switching from pre-health to creative technologies my third year in college, and I am thankful for such a supportive team and experience in building my skills and this meetup from the ground up. Through this experience, I learned about the sensitivity of branding and the deep connection between a brand and its community; the development and value of branding guidelines to enforce consistent, sustainable visuals; pipelines and best practices using graphic design software (vector graphics <3); and designing my own pipeline to create graphics for multiple resolutions using the same design assets.

It has been an honor to grow this community, uplift underrepresented voices in games, and expand the Games Y’all horse’s adventures from the beginning through graphic design work and directly connecting with the indie games community at events. Today, I’m happy to continue designing and help hosting Games Y’all!
